The Haven offers both residential treatment and sober living programs for men and women struggling with addiction to drugs and alcohol. All of The Haven's facilities are conveniently located near downtown Salt Lake City, within walking distance of UTA TRAX and the University of Utah. Individuals needing help to stay sober find extra support with The Haven's Sober Living Program. While residents work on the skills needed to live alcohol and drug-free, The Haven Alumni show residents that life without drugs and alcohol can be fun and exciting. The Haven has been has been a leader in treating substance misuse disorders in Utah since 1969. Recovery from alcohol and substance abuse is possible.

Staying Mentally Strong

Staying Mentally StrongOur Mental Health is just as important as our physical health. We tend to put these needs aside easier than the physical ones, but learning how to boost your mental strength will help you physically, emotionally, and spiritually as well. There is such a prejudice and stigma surrounding mental health these days, worrying about your mental health does not mean you are mentally ill, or that something is wrong with you.

It means to work on yourself, to understand yourself, and having the self awareness to now what is and what isn’t right for you.

Without adequate mental strength, life's inevitable challenges will likely fill you with self-doubt and anxiety. Those uncomfortable feelings can lend way to negative thinking. And negative thinking will affect your behavior, which can inadvertently turn your catastrophic predictions into a self-fulfilling prophecy. Whether you're dealing with a serious health problem, or you're faced with a financial crisis, tough times are inevitable. And it's during those tough times that your mental strength will be tested.
Staying strong in the midst of hardship requires you to manage your thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Paying attention to all three areas will help you emerge from your struggles even stronger than before. To remember how to stay strong during life's toughest challenges, follow the ABC formula:


1. Accept reality:
Acceptance doesn't mean agreement. Instead, it's about acknowledging what is happening from a realistic standpoint. So while you may not agree with things like abortion, you can accept that it happens.
2. Behave productively:
Accepting reality helps you manage your thoughts and regulate your emotions—which are key to productive behavior. The choices you make when you're faced with problems determine how quickly you'll find a solution.
3. Control upsetting thoughts:
Your mind can be your best asset or your biggest enemy. If you believe your negative thoughts, your self-limiting beliefs will prevent you from reaching your greatest potential. Thinking, "This will never work. I'm not good enough," or, "I can't stand one more minute of this," will derail you from your goals. It's important to recognize when your inner monologue becomes overly pessimistic. Remember that just because you think something, doesn't make it true.
