Most people don’t know what to expect when going to a residential treatment facility for the first time; it can be very overwhelming, and in some cases hindering your want to go at all. We are going to take a look at the main things to expect, and hopefully alleviate some fear of the unknown. First thing to keep in mind is that the professionals running these facilities have seen it all, they are not there to judge you, only help you.
We are going to take a look at the extensive intake process, and what you should expect from it:
- As we mentioned above you do not have to fear judgment on the intake, all you have to do is be 100 percent honest about your drug and alcohol use, to ensure the best care possible.
- Your bags may or may not be searched, depending on the treatment center and their policy, but if so it is nothing to fear just a safety precaution.
- Expect that during your stay your privacy will be limited. Isolation is something taken very seriously, and is not generally allowed in excess. Your daily schedule will be packed with therapy groups, chores, and community groups, to keep you busy and surrounded by your peers.
- There is little down time, treatment is not supposed to be a vacation, most of your time will be spent engaging in therapeutic activities designed to help you overcome your struggles with addiction.
- There will be a strict set of rules you will be expected to follow. The more you follow the rules, the faster you earn privileges such as visits and phone calls. It also has been shown that the more you stick to the rules, the more you will get out of your treatment experience. Plus not following the rules will lead to privileges being revoked, and you eventually being asked to leave the facility.
Rehab is designed to offer you the incredible opportunity to change your life for the better. Many people in need of rehab never get the opportunity, so if you are a lucky one that does, take advantage and get the most out of it. It is an advantage to be able to drop your life for a few months and completely focus on yourself, so during the stressful times remember to think positively.
