12-step Program’s Positive Impact on Substance Abuse Recovery

program recoveryThe first 12-step program, Alcoholics Anonymous is a guide on how to do life, and especially when you deal with the chronic, and life-threatening disease of addiction? Many alcoholics and addicts alike have not only gotten their lives back through this 12-step program; they have improved their lives in ways beyond their once limited beliefs in themselves. There are now several sister programs in the 12-step based practice of recovery, which provide alcoholics and addicts to find the best fit for them. There is NA (narcotics anonymous), CA (cocaine anonymous), HA (heroin anonymous), CODA (codependency anonymous), and many more. In residential substance abuse treatment 12-step programs are integrated into the clinical treatment plan. These programs focus on treating the whole person, not just one condition.

It has been proven that the best success comes with this integrated treatment; it incorporates mental health, addictive behavior, spiritual healing, and a 12-step philosophy. In the negative light, it is not uncommon for alcoholics and addicts to enter treatment with an “anti 12-step” attitude, as they get a religious or cult like feel from its foundation and principles. Some people are just not interested in 12-step, and that is ok. However, it is important to get them all the information first, and then have them experience the fellowship at meetings and an event. This will help guide them in making an educated, and unbiased decision based on their actual experience with 12-step. The social aspect and fellowshipping this program provides is hard to find elsewhere, so before making a decision that it is not for you, give it and what it has to offer a chance.
