There's been a surge of interest in the business of drugs. This is particularly true for the opioid epidemic. Opioids have causes 40,000-plus deaths in recent years. The focus is starting to shift from individual overdoses to the business world. Many people who end up on heroin start off on prescriptions. Companies like Purdue Pharma and Insys have found themselves the focus of lots of unwanted attention.
The justice system, government agencies like the FDA, and medical associations are looking carefully at the way these painkillers have been prescribed. They've found cases of inappropriate targeting by pharmaceutical companies. And they've found questionable off-label prescriptions, for example, with podiatrists and dentists prescribing drugs intended for breakthrough cancer pain.
These have proven to be particularly troublesome when it comes to opioid addiction. Fentanyl is fifty times more powerful than morphine. It has been linked to very serious drug dependence and to an uptick in overdoses. Journalists have found cases where pain clinic personnel were just as addicted as their patients, nodding out during appointments. This disease can truly touch anyone: a nurse, a military veteran, anyone.
It's not just opioids. Methamphetamine toxicity is still being implicated in thousands of deaths annually. We've all seen the Faces of Meth campaign, which chronicles slow decline. Not everyone understands that meth can cause strokes and brain hemorrhages, even in otherwise healthy young people. If you're using, it's important to stop now. Meth is hard to kick, but it can be done.
Often, when people are active in their addiction, they feel like ghosts in their own lives. At The Haven, we can help you start to feel present again. We offer in-patient rehabilitation and transitional housing in Utah. We stay in touch with our program alumni, too. If you're looking for substance abuse treatment, contact The Haven today.
