When it comes to recovering from substance abuse and dependence, community can be key to achieving, and sustaining sobriety. High levels of social support are promoted as a powerful tool in developing a new sober life filled with support, and driven by community.
54 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities in the United States offer peer support groups, and 47 percent host self-help groups to promote the support among peers recovering. In this age of social media, recovery support has begun to flourish online, as well as across all social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc.). The substance abuse recovery community makes use of hashtags related to conquering addiction, and then staying sober. We have seen these hashtags take flight in all areas of social networking, and should know they have helped spread awareness and support immensely.
Utah comes in first with 144.4 Instagram posts per capita that include recovery and sobriety hashtags. As we know seeking treatment is brave, it makes us happy to see our Instagram, Twitter and other social media communities supporting this and celebrating the achievements of recovery. This is the kind of pride and encouragement that gives people hope, and continues to push in a direction of getting help.
So when you or a loved one are sharing about your successes, and even struggles on social media keep in mind that using hashtags such as #sober, #soberlife, #sobriety, #recovery, #12steps, #recoveringaddict, and #wedorecover are reaching the people that need it most!
